Guide

How do I fill in a PDF form without printing it?

If the PDF has form fields, click into them and type — the values save into the file. If it is a scan with no fields, you cannot type into the lines; you place text boxes over them instead. Check the result in a second reader before sending.

First, find out which kind you have

Open the file and click on a line that should take a name. If a cursor appears and the field highlights, it is a fillable form (an AcroForm). If nothing happens, the page is a picture of a form.

The difference matters because the two need different tools, and using the wrong one produces a file where your answers look placed but are not attached to anything.

Fillable forms

  1. Tab through the fields instead of clicking. It reveals the tab order, which is the order the form was designed for.
  2. Watch for fields that are too small: text that overflows is clipped in some readers and visible in others.
  3. Leave checkboxes and radio buttons until last. A wrongly set radio group can lock the others.
  4. Save, then reopen. If the values are gone, the form was set to not save — that is the form's choice, not the tool's.

Flat forms and scans

With no fields, you place text over the lines and a mark over the signature block. Position is everything: a value sitting half a line low reads as a mistake.

Fill every field the form asks for, including the ones that do not apply. "N/A" is an answer; an empty box is an invitation to send it back.

Check before you send

Open the finished file in a different application from the one you made it in — a phone viewer if you worked on a laptop. The two render text slightly differently, and that is where an overflow shows up.

Then check that a signature is on the page that expects it. Forms with a signature block on page 4 are common, and signing page 1 is a common error.

Where this stops

This cannot create form fields where none exist. It places content over the page; it does not turn a scan into an interactive form.

It also cannot apply a digital certificate or a cryptographic signature — the signature is drawn or typed onto the page.

Short answers
Why can I not type in the form at all?

The PDF was almost certainly printed to a flat image rather than exported with fields. No reader can type into it; text has to be placed over the page instead.

Are my answers saved in the file?

Yes for fields that permit it. Some forms are locked by the author, and those will not retain values in any application.

Does the form get uploaded?

No. The file is opened and rewritten in the browser tab, so tax and medical forms are not sent anywhere.

This page is general information, not advice for your document. The tools do what they say on their own pages, and every limit is printed there.
